"Athens 2004 is my big goal"

Janeth Arcain has played in three Olympics and won bronze and silver medals, but there is yet one golden dream to fulfill...

Janeth had a chance to answer our questions during the inaugural FIBA Women's World Cup in Samara Russia.

FIBA: What is your goal for the next season?

Janeth: "There is no question that the Olympic Games in Athens 2004 is on the top of my list. I am thinking of not playing in the WNBA next season in order to get better prepared for the tournament."

FIBA: What would be the conditions for doing that?

Janeth: "I would have to find a sponsor, who would cover up the loss of income I would suffer from skipping the WNBA next season. Maybe the Brazilian Federation could help. We need to find the ways how to finance the National team program, we are professional athletes and many of the national team players are playing abroad. Only with a good preparation in June and July next year, we have a chance to win a medal, and maybe even the gold."

FIBA: The coach of the Brazilian national team said during the FIBA World Championship last year, that under the current conditions, where the top players play almost throughout the whole year, it is difficult to put together a strong and healthy national team.

Janeth: "That is true. We do have almost no rest. We have to find solutions for that. But as I said, it has mainly to do with finances. We all want to play for our country, but at the same time the sport is our profession."

FIBA: What will you do until summer 2004?

Janeth: "I will play for my club team Sao Paolo, it is a good place for basketball. I have a contract with them for one more year and then we will see."

FIBA: How do you like the idea of a World Cup for Women's clubs?

Janeth: "It is an excellent idea and a wonderful initiative. Everybody is going to learn from this. Many of the best players of the world are playing, it is also an event for the fans. All teams came here to play hard and to win, both for their club and also for their country. The organization is great, the opening ceremony was just wonderful."

FIBA: What do you precisely mean by 'everybody will learn'?

Janeth: "Mainly our young players. We came here with a young team and they will profit from the experience. Next year we will be better prepared."

FIBA: Do you get media exposure for this event back in Brazil?

Janeth: "Friends called me up and told me that there is some coverage on the internet, the media knows about it and follows. But this is a new event, and people have to learn more about it."

FIBA: You have a message for the Brazilian basketball fans?

Janeth: "OBRIGADA PELA TORCIDA, CONTINUEM ACREDITANDO!"
